Work In Progress: "Giant Monster"

Here is a typical doodle (more specifically an "unplanned piece"). These things occur during deadlines, typically advertising stuff that is so distant from genre that I find myself itching to escape into my own world and start daydreaming about designs and color. A couple of days ago, I started noodling on a blank digital canvas in between emails of revisions on some storyboards. I started thinking about the recent rumors of a new American made Godzilla movie in development, and started thinking "hmmm... How would I design a new Godzilla?" And then, after scribbling with that in mind, I wandered away from that premise and started picturing old monster magazine covers of the 60's and 70's.. And really just kept changing visuals in my head.

So far, this is what I have. I'd like to add some people in the foreground... Perhaps a couple of scientists... Maybe one is a dozen yards away running frantically toward camera, and in the foreground a couple of other scientists waving him to hurry as they are climbing in a vehicle- perhaps a jeep.

Looks great however I can't help feeling like something is missing when I look at the picture.

Like always you manage to make the lighting and colors look good and kept realistic.

Kind of makes me think of the Oto Island scene in the original. This may sound like sacrilege but I think it would be interesting to see the 1954 movie remade with today's effects, bringing the story to a new group of people. It actually looks kind of like this in my head. It would be a chance to get the Kayama novelization in English! :D

For some reason this artwork remind me a scene from "Godzilla Vs Mothra" movie . There is a scene in which Godzilla have a similar glance .

lol. I need to learn to "doodle" like this. I like it. I'm picturing your scientists running away, and liking that too.
Merakenai Featured By Owner Sep 9, 2009
I also feel that the monster in not in the center. This drawing seems more like a background to something. But I like it though! I have always liked your stuff ^^
And oh, is that dragons or aerodactyls in the sky behind the monster?
Pardilate Featured By Owner Sep 7, 2009  Hobbyist Digital Artist
im painting TUrin and glaurung at the moment, :-)
battlefist Featured By Owner Sep 7, 2009
As I said, this work is still great from the technical side, but it, well... I can't find anything on the picture, were I should stop for a while; just stare and say: "Wow, it actually 'speaks to me'!"

And the problem is that it does not speak to me.
To be honest, I'm not rly sure how to explain it, but I think you do know, of what I'm generally talking.

Oh, and one more thing.
The Giant Monster - as I see - was meant to be the main character of thus painting, right?
So.. It does not look like one.
It's too much simillar with background; on the very beginning I thought, that he's part of the second plan, not the main 'Giant Monster' from the title.

Oh, or maybe it's just I've stared so much on your dragon/lizard works, that I'm just full of the same style of how u actually paint them?
Dunno at all.
chrisscalf Featured By Owner Sep 7, 2009
Well, you're correct about the monster being a background element. As I stated in my desc. it is part of a scene with foreground people reacting to the rising of the creature behind the rocks. Very much a tribute to Godzilla films of the old days crossed over with "Eerie" and "Creepy" style magazine covers (or at least what I got out of them).
Varulvsnatt Featured By Owner Sep 7, 2009
Very nice! It looks to be finished in my eyes, but I suppose you have other plans for this one, no?

He looks beautiful! I love the spike effects! That addition of the scientists would look pretty cool, a good idea to have them getting into a jeep, like "Lets get the hell out of here!!", lol.
battlefist Featured By Owner Sep 6, 2009
Actually it's easy to see, that thus work's in progress.
It has no spirit at all.

And yes, I DO love your works. I know all ur works uploaded on YT and DA.
But this one still lack some 'freshness'.
chrisscalf Featured By Owner Sep 6, 2009
An interesting perception. And probably one of the most beautiful things about art-- the pure subjectiveness of it.

The spirit (or lack thereof) in a work of art usually lies within the viewers perceptions. That's what makes it fascinating. What one person sees as an artistic "dud", another finds a world of depth and color.

This one has a ton of spirit for me. Ironically I am more happy with this painting than most that I have uploaded lately, especially since it is not a planned piece. It truly is a doodle.

Only through the middle of creating it did I start to see a specific feel and direction that I wanted to take it towards... And though it is not done, it is at a "freeze-frame" moment where I really like it. That was why I posted it before it was done... I feel that whatever else I do to it will probably lose that feeling that I have in it at the moment.

I am curious though- when you say it lacks spirit, what exactly do you define as the "spirit" that it lacks?
